International Commission on Illumination (CIE) About us
The CIE stands as the global authority in light and lighting, driving the consolidation of knowledge and setting the standards for light measurements and applications. It brings together an unparalleled global network of experts, users, and industry professionals to consolidate knowledge, translate research into practice, and, crucially, develop internationally agreed methods, definitions, and recommendations that enable reliable measurement, specification, and application of light.
At the heart of the CIE’s work is standardization. The CIE focuses on understanding and measuring optical radiation, photobiology, photochemistry, vision and colour, interior and exterior lighting, and image technology, bridging the gap between research and application. These documents support consistent practice across laboratories, manufacturers, regulators, and researchers worldwide and they are widely recognized as authoritative references within international standardization. CIE is the recognized global authority for light and lighting-related standardization within ISO and IEC, and therefore many dual-logo ISO/CIE and IEC/CIE standards are authored by the CIE or developed jointly with these organizations. This influence is also strongly reflected in Europe: almost all standards developed by CEN and CENELEC in the field of light and lighting are built on the CIE’s scientific and technical groundwork.
